So there are 6 sides to the box. ...2 -(l x h) (front and back), 2-  (w x h) (sides) , and 2 -(l x w) (top and bottom).

So you need:

2(12 x 10) + 2(8 x 10) + 2(12 x 8) = 240 + 160 + 192 = 592 square inches

Find the surface area of the box.  That will be the amount you need in square inches.

 

A = 2[(12 x 8) + (12 x 10) + (10 x 8)] in² = ? in²
