Ok, so let’s simplify the fractions this way
2 1/4 = 8/4 + 1/ 4 or 9/4
3 2/3 = 9/3 + 2/3 or 11/3
To add fractions, we need a common denominator, so the easiest one would be /12:
3x 9 for the numerator; 3 x 4 for the denominator would be:
9/4 = 27/12
And
4 x 11 for the numerator; 4 x 3 for the denominator would be:
11/3 = 44/12
With the same denominator, we can add
27/12 + 44/12 = 71/12
To compare the amounts, we would make 6 into a fraction using 12 as the denominator. So, using the same method as we already used, it would be:
6 x 12 for the numerator to 72/12
With all amounts as fractions we can compare the two fractions
71/12 the total for the 2 purchased potatoes
72/12 for the stated amount of potatoes
2 1/4 = 8/4 + 1/ 4 or 9/4
3 2/3 = 9/3 + 2/3 or 11/3
