Divide the maximum load in kg by the mass of one boy in kg.  That gives you the number of boys.  If the result is not an integer, round down.

If you have 1 boy, that's    45*1 = 45kg.

 

If you have 2 boys, that's  45*2 = 90kg

 

If you have N boys, you have 45*N kg.

 

We need to know what N makes a total of 960, so that:

 

45N = 960

 

From here we divide both sides by 45

 

N = 960 / 45 = 21.33

 

 

So 21 boys can ride the elevator.

 

NOTE: You would round down even if the result was 21.9, since rounding up would overload the elevator. (22 * 45 = 990kg)
