Algebra story problem

Question

a family is taking a trip and is driving at an average rate of 60 miles/hour;  on the way home they are traveling 40miles/hour;  the trip home is taking 1 hour longer then the trip there.  Let d be the distance in miles that the family travelled.  How many hours did it take to travel there?

Remember, Martha, that distance = rate x time.

 

Let's let h = the hours it took to get there.  Then the time back is h + 1, right?  The distance is the same, so:

 

60h = 40(h +1).
