Determine the resultant velocity V of the boat?

The velocity of a boat is 20km/hr in a direction 50 degrees north of east. The wind velocity is 5 km/hr from the west. The resultant velocity of the boat can be represented by the side of a triange in which the two given velocities are the other sides.

Vx = 20cos(50°)+5 = 17.86 km/hr

Vy = 20sin(50°)      = 15.32 km/hr

 

V = √(Vx²+Vy²) = 23.53 km/hr

Θ = tan^-1(15.32/17.86) = 40.62° north of east
