A couple does not wish to spend more than $50 for dinner at a restaurant. If a sales tax of 7% is added to the bill and they plan to tip 15% after the tax has been added, what is the most they can spend for the meal? (Round your answer to the nearest cent.)

the 7% sales tax is .07x

the 15% tip is .15(x + .07x)

total = $50

 

So your equation is

 

x + .07x + .15(1.07x) = 50

x + .07x + .1605x = 50

1.2305x = 50

x = $40.63

tax is $2.84

tip is $6.52

 

Total is $49.99

 

Or they could spend $40.64 giving a total of $50.007 and because the smallest coin is a penny, they can't pay the .7 cents.
