The square of a number added to twice the number equals 24 what is the number

I'm confused on this and the teacher isn't here and I cant figure it out.

 n squared + 2n - 24 = 0.

There are two numbers that meet these conditions.

 

x^2 + 2x = 24

 

x^2 + 2x - 24 = 0

 

( x    +    6 )( x    -     4  ) = 0

 

x+6 = 0 ---> x = -6

x-4 = 0 ---> x = 4
