he most basic way of perceiving a 5 to 3 ratio is to think of 8 equal parts, 5 of which are meat, 3 of which are potatoes.

 

In order words, 5/8 of 4 lb = 20/8 lb meat = 5/2 lb = 2.5 lb.

That leaves 3/8 of the whole 4 lb meatloaf for the potatoes, e.g. 1.5 lb of potatoes.
