Absolute value is the distance from 0, and we measure distance positively. That's why 8 and -8 have the same absolute value, because they are both 8 away from 0.
If A < 0, the absolute value is -A, because a double negative gives us a positive.

So, if A = -9, then the absolute value is -(-9) = 9.
