i need to solve for the quadratic equation 5s^2=45 im assuming i would need to write the equation in the form of ax^2+bx+c=0 ,but am not sure how.

Thomas gave you a good, direct solution.  If you want to see a solution that uses factorization,

 

5s² = 45

 

Divide both sides by 5.

 

s² = 9

 

s² - 9 = 0

 

This is a difference of squares, which is factored as

 

s² - 3² = (s  -3)(s + 3)

 

s = ±3

 

And yet another way to solve this,

 

5s² - 45 = 0

 

a = 5

b = 0

c = -45

 

s = {-b ± √(b² - 4ac)} / (2a)

 

This should also give

 

s = ±3
