The sum of two numbers is 61: x + y = 61
One number is 16 more than twice the other number: y = 2x + 16
Substitute 2x+16 in place of x in 1st equation and solve to find x.
x + 2x + 16 = 61
Add like terms
3x + 16 = 61
subtract 16 from both sides
3x = 45
divide both sides by 3
x = 15
Now to find y just use: y = 2x+16 or y = 61 - x which can be derived from the very 1st equation

If the sum was 60 instead of 61 just follow the same procedure
using x+y = 60
However, the answer won't come out in whole numbers
