I would do this problem in reverse... find the square of each whole number starting with 1, until you reach an answer that is 100 or greater. Then add up the number of whole numbers you used.
12 = 1
22 = 4
32 = 9
42 = 16
52 = 25
62 = 36
72 = 49
82 = 64
92 = 81
102 = 100 -> Done!
There are a total of 10 whole numbers that are square roots of numbers between 1 and 100.
