Well, this is not too bad. We are going to make an equation based on the amount of acid in the different parts equal to the amount of acid in the end product.
First, let's look at the amount we have of each component. Let x = the amount of pure acid. 6 is the amount of the 25% solution. So the amount of the final solution is x + 6. Do you see that?
Next, we look at the amount of acid in each component.100% of x is the amount of acid in that component, 25% of 6 is the amount in the other part and 40% (x+6)is the amount of acid in the
final amount. Our equation follows
100% x + 25% (6) = 40% (x+6)
x + 1.5 = .4x + 2.4
You should be able to solve from here. X will be your answer.
