Math Tax and Discount

Question

Candice bought 3 shirts. Each shirt cost the same amount and was discounted by $3.66. Candice paid a total of $62.31 before tax. How much did each shirt cost before the dicount?

Josh,

In order to find out how much each shirt cost before the discount, you have to add the discount back into the total.  Each shirt was discounted by $3.66, so the total discount was 3 x 3.66, or 10.98.  Add that to what she paid and you get the cost for 3 shirts.  Divide that by three, and you will get the cost for each shirt.
