katrina starts down an excercise path and walks at a rate of 4mph. At 9:30 am, Carla leaves from the same place and starts chasing Katrina, catching her at 10:00 am. Find Carla's jogging rate.

Let Carla's rate be x mph. She jogged 30 minutes at this rate to catch Katrina.  So Carla jogged for a distance of (1/2) x miles. Katrina started at 9, so she walked one hour, covered the same distance and her rate was 4 mph. Hence she walked 4 miles.  Equating Carla's distance to Katrina's,

 

(1/2) x = 4

 

x = 8.

 

Carla's jogging rate is 8 mph.
