Terms of length into terms of width

Question

Mixing learns the length of the Central Park is 5 times as its width , how do I use this fact to write an expression for the length of the park in terms of w only. Not good with algebra so not sure if I'm supposed to multiply it by it 9600 meters. Please help really stuggling.

Nancy, I see you are not comfortable with length and width of rectangles.

Translating from words to algebra can be daunting at first.

 

Start by identifying the quantities involved.

Let W be the width of the park 

Let L be the length of the park

 

Next translate the words into an expression.

Translate the words “the length of Central Park” into “L”

Translate the words “is five times its width” into “=5W”

now string those together:

L = 5W

 

This is an expression for length in terms of width, which is what the problem asked for.

It looks like you have lots of questions about this.  I will answer one of them with you.

The words say that the length is five times the width.  Times means you are multiplying, five times means you are multiplying by 5.  What are you multiplying by 5?  The next thing, which is the width.  So the length = 5 w 

The point is to change the words into mathematical symbols.  That is what this part of algebra is about.

Keep working, and use your book and class notes.  You can figure out the other problems, just take your time and don't forget to breathe.
