f(4/5) = 3(4/5)3 + (1/4)(4/5) - 7
f(4/5) = 3(64/125) + 1/5 - 7
f(4/5) = 192/125 - 34/5
f(4/5) = 192/125 - 850/125
f(4/5) = -658/125

What makes you so certain that f is a cubic, Carol?
I think you should have asked if the student intended for it to be a rational algebraic function (and as is so frequently the case, omitted needed parentheses).
