A quadratic in standard form is written as
y=a(x-h)2+k
Because the 2 solutions, or "roots", of the equation are (1,0) and (3,0), this gives as a possible equation:
y=(x-1)(x-3)
y=x2-3x-1x+3 use FOIL
y=x2-4x+3 simplified
To get this in standard form we need to re-group the equation and complete the square:
y=(x2-4x+?)+3-?
y=(x2-4x+4)+3-4 add 4 to the grouped for completing the square
and subtract 4 to maintain the same equation
y=(x2-4x+4)-1
y=(x-2)2-1
In order to get the leading coefficient to be 3, multiply everything by 3:
y=3(x-2)2-3 this is in standard form
y=3(x2-4x+4)-3
y=3x2-12x+12-3
y=3x2-12x+9 this is in vertex form
