Write down an expression for the candidate's total mark in terms of q and c. Write down and solve an equation for the number of questions which james gets right

In a multiple choice examination of 25 questions, four marks are given for each correct answer and two marks are deducted for each wrong answer. A candidate attempts q questions and gets c correct..... james attempts 22 questions and scores 55 marks.

Question:  If a candidate attempts q questions, s/he does not attempt 25 - q questions.  Are these 25 - q questions marked as wrong, or ignored when the exam is scored?

The unattempted questions can be (a) ignored, (b) marked incorrect, or (c) evaluated "pro rata", that is in proportion to the attempted questions answered correctly and answered wrongly.  To illustrate (c), say 20 out of 25 are attempted.  Out of 20, 15 are correct (proportion 15/20 - 3/4) and 5 (proportion 1/4) are wrong. Then out of the 5 unattempted. 5(3/4) ~ 4 (giving the student a slight advantage) are deemed correct and 1 is deemed wrong.

On the answer key it states that the expression will be 6c-9-25 and the answer will come to be 6c-47=55:17 correct but i dont know how to work it out

You say "On the answer key it states that the expression will be 6c-9-25 and the answer will come to be 6c-47=55:17 correct..."

Suppose 17 are correct, as the answer tells you.  Then James gets 17x4 = 68 for the correct answers.  But he got a total of 55, so 68-55 = 13 points he lost for wrong answers. But he loses 2 points for each wrong answer, so the points lost must be an EVEN number and 13 is odd.

Something is fishy here! I do not understand why, according to your answer key, "the expression will be 6c-9-25" (what happened to q?)and later "9-25" seems to be set equal to 47!!! Is there an error in the problem or the answer sheet?

The statement "" four marks are given for each correct answer and two marks are deducted for each wrong answer"" implies that the test is being scored by add up marks - not by deducting them from 100%.
Therefore by default there are
0 marks for unattempted,   -2 for attempted but wrong,    and +4 for correct
This means no marks are given for unattempted - or if you are deducting marks from 100 them you need to deduct 4 marks.
