Thank you ! I have been getting into debates with several of my friends about this problem. They all said 7:40, becuase the question says he arrived at school at 8:15 and asked at what time did he leave?

7:25 is one of the options to circle for an answer on the paper, but 7:40 was not listed. They are all saying the question is written incorrect. I told him it says he arrived at school at 8:15, but it doesn't say if he was late or on time, because he got dressed and ate before he left and that took him 15 minutes.

Is one of the options listed "none of the above", or something to this effect ?
If he arrives at school at 8:15 and it takes him 35 minutes to get to school, you start at 8:15 and go back 35 minutes. If you go back 15 minutes you are at 8:00. Now go back the rest of the time which is 20 minutes.
If you are at 8:00 and go back 20 minutes, the time is 20 minutes before 8:00 or 7:40. I agree with your friends. Sometimes a problem contains extra information that is not needed to solve the problem. This is put in to see if you can understand the problem and can determine the information that you do need to correctly solve the problem. It appears that this is one of those problems with extra information that, if used, will give you the wrong answer.

This is a multiple choice question. The options the problem writer gave to choose from are: A. 7:00 A.M., B. 7:15 A.M., C. 7:25 A.M. and D. 7:35 A.M.  There is not an option for none of these, You have to choose one.  In this problem you do need to use the extra information to match one of the answers listed, but you would not have known that if the options were not listed and you had to fill in a blank. If that were the case, would you be wrong? (i ask the rehtorically). Thanks for your explanation! I went with the idea that in math, if you are given extra information, you probably need to use it. :)  Unfortunately though, i have one frustrated 5th grader who is trying to understand and make sense of math. The question on the paper did not help.
