the perimeter of a rectangle is 16x-6. if the length is 5x+2, what is the width?

 I need help and work shown to understand.

perimeter is 16x-6. this = 2l +2w. 2w = 10x+4. perimeter - 2l = 2w. So 2w = 16x-6-10x+4 = 6x-2, therefore, w=3x-1.

When you subtract 10x + 4, you must distribute the negative sign to get -10x -4 which gives you 6x -10 rather than 6x - 2.
therefore width is 3x - 5 and not 3x - 1
