Solve the system by the substitution method. y = x + 4 and y^2 = 16x

how would one solve this particular problem by substitution? y = x+4

                                                                                        y^2 = 16x

Not saying that Surendra is wrong, she did a great work, bu her answe was incomplete because as Ira says the two variables need to be defined.

     Don't mean to be controversial, but the answer to a system of equations is always a value for all the variables involved. Surendra found the x value but now you need to plug that back in to find the corresponding y value. Either equation will do and that mahes sense. You are supposed to be finding an x and y that works in both equations. So, when x=4, y=8.

On substitution

 

(x+4)^2=16x

 

x^2+8x+16=16x

 

x^2+8x-16x+16=0

 

x^2-8x +16=0

 

(x-4)^2=0

 

x=4
