Hi...Jill from Metairie, LA. Hope you are having a great weekend.
Thanks for connecting with Wyzant...I am here to help.
Alright...I'll help you get started with both problems, but won't give you the entire answer. It would be too easy to just give you the answer. I will help you understand how to set it up and then answer the problem, then when you do you will be a pro at answering these kind of problems.
All these problems have one thing on common, they are asking you to have an understanding of converting on unit of measurement to another.
Here is an example: there are 12 inches in 1 foot. when you rewrite it in the form of a ratio you can then begin to answer just about any kind of similar problems...like how many inches in 97 feet.
First set up the ratio:
1 foot when you set up a ratio where the bottom value and
12 inches the top value are pretty much the same thing, its
like saying they they equal one: like 2/2 or 100/100
They were use the unknown and the new value to solve the problem.
1 foot = 97 feet So we're saying in this equation
12 inches x inches 97 feet is the same as x inches
just like 1 ft is the same as 12in
So how do we solve for x inches? Remember that part in math were you 'cross multiply'? That's what we do next: Multiply across: rewrite equation
(1 foot)(x inches) = (97 feet)(12 inches) Complete the operation
x ft • inches = 97 ft • 12 inches Complete the operation/rewrite
x ft • inches = 1164 ft•inches So how do you find out how
inches in 97 feet
x ft • inches = 1164 ft•inches You remove ft because want in so
ft ft divide by both sides by ft
x inches = 1164 inches So you solution is that there are
1164 inches in 97 feet.
So here are the HINTS to solve the three problems:
Problem # 1: You will need to find out how many feet are in a mile
I will help you with that...5280 feet in one mile. With that
information you can solve how many feet are in 0.6 of a mile
Using the same ratio equation I showed you about, calculate the number of feet in 0.6 of a mile. When you calculate the answer, then since it is a square area, multiply the number you solved, by itself, which will give you the square area IN FEET which measures 0.6 of a mile.
Problem number 2: Next problem uses the ratio example as well. This time the problem asks to find out how many acres there are in an area which is square and measures 0.6 of a mile on all sides. HINT: here again, I will help with a hint: 1 square miles = 640 acres Use the examples I gave to you to calculate how many acres there are in area which measures 0.6 of a mile
And lastly, Problem #3: This is the reverse of problems number 2. Problem number 2 asked to find the number acres in 0.6 of a square mile. This problems gives you an area which more that a mile, 303 miles, asking you to find out how many acres are in those 303 square miles. I gave you the HINT of how many acres(640 acres) are in a square mile. Now you have an area of 303 square miles, so how many acres are there in those 303. Use the same ratio equation, calculate the same way to get the answer.
