One number is 6 more than another number. Their sum is 260. What are the numbers?

I've been having trouble to understand and to solve this question, how can I solve this? I am unsure how to solve, but also unsure how to write a "let" statement to define any variable that I decide to use.

There are two unknowns here. We'll call the smaller number x.

We know that when we add 6 to x, we'll get the bigger number. So let's call the bigger number x + 6.

We also know that when we add these two numbers together, we'll get 260. In other words...

x + (x + 6) = 260

2x + 6 = 260

 

Now solve the equation for x which is the smaller number.
