1. Emily mixed together 9 gallons of Brand A fruit drink and 8 gallons of Brand B fruit drink, which contains 48% fruit juice. Find the percent of fruit juice in Brand A if the mixture contained 30% fruit juice.

Answer 1

Let A = juice concentration in brand A.

We add 9A to 48% of B's 8 gallons to make

30% of 17 gallons.

 

9A + .48(8) = .3(17)

9A = 5.1 - 3.84

9A= 1.26

A = 0.14 = 14%

Let x = the percent of fruit juice in Brand A

9x + .48(8) = .30(17)      There are 17 gallons altogether.

9x + 3.84 = 5.1

9x = 1.26

x = .14 = 14%
