For beginning the process of translating words to math expressions, with operations and variables, it is good to include all the intermediate steps [often skipped by teachers and tutors].
A.  Make and keep a list, like a translation dictionary:
        words               means                     math
       ----------                                       -----------
more than                                       +   (> for greater than)
         sum                                                +
         twice                                               2*x
         less than                                         -     (<)
         difference                                        -
         times                                              *
         product                                           *
         quotient                                          /
           . . .  [lots more]
B. This give you the ability to literally translate an expression in words:
     "2 more than twice a number"                [let x = "a number"]
      2        +         2 * x
Now, math experts will say that it is preferred to put the expression in order (using the commutative property) so that any powers of variables come first, like this:      3y3 + 4y2  + 7y + 30
For the expression
      2 + 2x
  that means the answer is:
     Let x = a number
     2x + 2
Now, once you understand that process, you might skip directly to "2x + 2", but, be careful, because other students may need the detailed explanation first.
