Defining functions of x

Determine if the following equations define functions of x:
 
a. y=√x+5
 
b. x2+y2=5

If √x is defined as just the positive square root, I would agree.  But I have seen quite a few problems in physics where sometimes it is the negative square root which gives the correct solution (one that is both mathematically correct and physically possible), or where both the positive and negative roots must be considered, sometimes splitting a problem solution into 2 regions.
