In 1992 funding for a program increased by 0.10 billion dollars from the funding in 1991. In 1993, the increase was 0.72 billion dollars over the funding in1992. For those three years the funding was 11.27 billion dollars. How much was funded in each of these years? 1n 1991, funding was ? Billion

Let x  is the number of billions in 1991.

 

Then

(x + 0.1) is the number of billions in 1992.

 

and

 

[(x + 0.1) + 0.72] is the number of billions in 1993.

 

We add the number of billions for the three years and solve the equation for x.

 

x + (x + 0.1) + [(x + 0.1) + 0.72] = 11.27

 

3x + 0.92 = 11.27

 

3x = 10.35

 

x = 10.35/3

 

x = 3.45

 

In 1991, the funding was 3.45 billion dollars.
