Algebra word problem!

Question

Nine students go out for a meal. In the restaurant each student puts the same amount of money on the table to pay for the meal. The bill is $142 and $2 is left over. How much money did each student put on the table?

Answer 1

You would add the bill of $142 and the $2 left over which equals $144. Then take the $144 and divide it by the 9 people.
