what is the sale if I know what the tax is

My sales tax is 8.25%.  If I know that my sales tax is $1971.26 how do I figure out what the gross sale was?

gross sale :

--divide the sales tax amount by the sales tax rate :

=1971.26/8.25%

           The sales tax would be calculated by multiplying the tax rate (expressed as a fraction) by the gross sales amount. If we let R be the tax rate, and GS be the gross sales amount and T be the tax then

 

T=R*GS we know T and R so we can solve for GS, GS=T/R=1971.26/.0825=$23,894.06.
