I love math, and I love to teach it.
This inequality can be done with a graphing calculator. However, to enter both inequalities into it, you need to solve for y in each inequality. For example, the first inequality should read, "x + y > 8. Subtract "x" from both sides of the inequality, and you get, y> -x + 8. The second inequality should read, " 2x + y < 14. This time you need to subtract 2x from both sides of the equation. You will get "y<-2x + 14." The next step is to enter the inequalities into the graphing mode in your graphing calculator. That would be the first, top function key, "Y=." If you are using a TI-83 Plus, you will see slashed line right before the Y= symbol. Use the arrow keys on your graphing calculator to move the flashing rectangle to the far right. The slashed line should then start to flash. Press enter until you see a triangle image with the top point pointing upwards. This will make a greater than shadow. Then press enter and enter the next inequality, y< -2x + 14. This time you will press enter until the top of the triangle points downward. Finally, press graph. The graph will come up showing you where the two inequalities intersect with their shadows. The intersected shadows will show you all points that are in common to both inequalities.
