Before you can combine like terms, you must always first consider if you need to use a number manipulation property, like the commutative, associative, or distributive property. Then you need to check if the order of operations is the next step in working through the problem. Combining like terms is last. So here is how this problem will work:
First, distribute the -2 through the parentheses:
0.5 = 4.1x + (-2 * 1.3x)+ (-2 * -4)
0.5 = 4.1x - 2.6x + 8 -- now you can combine the terms. You have x's and numbers.
0.5 = 1.5x +8 -- Now move the 8 to the other side of the equation (isolate the variable x)
-8 = -8
-7.5 = 1.5x -- Now eliminate the 1.5 by dividing (continue to isolate the variable).
1.5 = 1.5
-5 = 1x, or x = -5 -- What is left is x is -5.
Remember: Use the 3 main properties to separate the terms. Then follow the order of operations. Then combine like terms.
I hope that makes things a little more clear.
