Edna walks 1.5 km to Amy's house, travelling 40 degrees east of north. The tower is due west of Amy's house. 

 

The angle of elevation from amys house to the top is 10 degress

this question is 2 parts.

in part 1, you need to get the distance from amy's house to the tower (X) using the distance from edna's house to amy's house (1500 meters) and the angle of travel (40)

in part 2, you will use the distance from amy's house to the tower (X) and the angle to the top of the tower (10) to get the height of the tower (Y)

 

part 1

once you sketch it, you will see that sin (40) = X / 1500

from this you will get, X = 964.2 meters

 

part 2

tan 10 = Y / 964.2

Y = 170 meters 

 

the tower is 170 meters tall
