Order of mixed operations: PEMDAS
 
"Please excuse my dear aunt sally"
 
There is another mnemonic device but I won't repeat it.
I don't want anybody picking on their sister. That's all I have to say.
 
In this problem, the order of mixed operations was used recursively inside the parenthesis.
Mixed operations inside the parenthesis resolved the same way.

1 - 34/ (24 - 7) - 2 x 3 =           <--- multiplication done first within the parenthesis
 
1 - 34/17 - 2x 3                       <--  then subtraction inside the parenthesis; parenthesis done
 
 1 - 2 -  6                                 <-- multiply and divide
 
 -1 - 6                                      <--- addition and subtraction done left to right
