First I think your question might be missing some parenthesis. Parenthesis are important because they tell you what to do first.
Now, as you wrote the problem, I would solve it like this
6 = sqrt(2z) -3-3
6 = sqrt(2z) -6
12 = sqrt(2z)
12^2 = [sqrt(2z)]^2
144 = 2z
144/2 = 2z/2
72 = z
But I am guessing that your question was most likely
6 = sqrt (2z-3) -3
the difference between the two is that in the first we have only the square root of 2z, in the second we have the squareroot of 2z -3.
This is how you would solve it
6 = sqrt (2z-3) -3 (add 3 to both sides)
9 = sqrt(2z-3) (square each side)
81 = 2z - 3 (add 3 to both sides)
84 = 2z (divide both sides by 2)
42 =z
