A map has a scale of 1 in. = 5 mi. What distance is represented by a line a 8 in. Long? What distance is represented by a line 3.5 in. Long?

You have to convert the inches to miles that are represented on the scale. if 1 in equals 5 miles, then 5 in equals 20 miles.

 

 

8in multiplied by 5 equals 40 miles

 

 

you would use the same system of conversion for the second part of the question

3.5 in multiplied by 5 equals 17.5

1 inch = 5 miles

So, 2 inches = 10 miles and 3 inches = 15 miles, etc.  You simply multiply the number of inches by 5 to get miles. 

Thus 8 inches would be equal to 40 miles (5 miles/inch x 8 inches = 40 miles)

 

For a line 3.5 inches, it will be 5 miles/inch x 3.5 inches = 17.5 miles.
