b) how Far East of its original position is the ship?

a) Cos(ø)=adjacent/hypotenuse

Cos(47°)=185km/h 

solve for h by multiplying both sides by h and dividing both sides by Cos(47°)...

h=185km/Cos(47°)=271.26km

 

b) Tan(ø)=opposite/adjacent

Tan(47°)=o/185km

solve for o my multiplying both sides by 185km...

o=(185km)(Tan[47°])=198.39km
