Perimeter of the first rectangle = 2L + 2W
Perimeter of the second rectangle = 2(2L) + 2(3W)
2L + 2W = 18
4L + 6W = 46
Now solve for the length and width by using either elimination or substitution.
Multiply the first equation by -2.
-4L - 4W = -36
4L + 6W = 46
Add these 2 equations together.
2w = 10
w = 5
2L = 18 - 10
2 l = 8
L = 4
The length of the rectangle is 4 inches and its width is 5 inches. You can do a solution check by substituting these values into any of the above equations.
