What is 3/(x+2) - 1/x = 1/5x ?

Have a test tomorrow. I'm struggling a bit with my fraction problems. I know to set both denominators equal and subtract but I do not now how or where to go from that point. Any and all help is appreciated!

( 3x - x -2) / x (x + 2) = 1/5x

 

(2x - 2) / x(x +2) = 1/5x

 

2x - 2 = (x + 2) / 5

 

10x - 10 = x + 2

 

 

9x = 12

 

x = 12/9

 

x = 4/3

Em, you have three denominators here. The common denominator is 5x(x + 2). Once you find it and get the numerators set, you don't need the denominators anymore!

 

15x - 5(x + 2) = 1(x + 2)

15x - 5x - 10 = x + 2

10x - 10 = x + 2

9x = 12

x = 4/3
