How do you simplify 2y-(x-y)

 I've been having trouble with parentheses, please help!

Whenever there is a negative (-) sign immediately before a bracket, you must change all the signs within that bracket whenever you remove the brackets (parenthesis).

 

now lets look at the question;

 

2y -(x - y) = 2y -x + y (notice that both x and y undergo a change in sigh)

 

Next gather like terms = 2y + y - x = 3y - x (answer),
