The minimum depth, d, in inches of a beam to support a load s pounds is given by the formula. Where l is the length and w is the width of the beam, both in feet.
A.Find the depth of the beam if the beam weighs 288 pounds, and is 10 feet long and 3 feet wide. Leave your answer in simplest radical form. Show your work.
B.Solve for the width of the beam using d=√sl/576w

If d = (sl/576w)1/2
d = (288*10/576*3)1/2
performing repeated divisions using factors of 2, and 3 in numerator and denominator gives d = (5/3)1/2
therefore d = sqr.rt. (5/3)
