It's very simple. If you add the two equations, you get a+b = 18 because the c's have opposite signs in the two different equations, and thus they cancel one another.

1)  b - c = 2

2)  a + c = 16

Find a+b

 

from equation 1 we can solve for c:

b-c=2        subtract b from both sides

-c = 2-b    multiply both sides by -1

c = b-2

 

in equation 2 replace c with b-2

 

a + c = 16

a + b -2 = 16    add 2 to both sides

a + b = 18
