Hello Jenny,
You'll need to memorize the Order of Operations (P.E.M.D.A.S.):
- Parenthesis
- Exponents
- Multiplication/Division
- Addition/Subtraction
This will be very important for all of your future math courses, so it's very important to memorize this order. It's nearly as important as memorizing your multiplication tables.
As it currently stands, the number sentence isn't correct:
4 + 8 ÷ 4 + 4 = 5
If you evaluate using PEMDAS, you'll get:
4 + 2 + 4 = 5
10 = 5 (??? what?)
So, where could you add parentheses to make it right? Maybe around the first two numbers?
(4 + 8) ÷ 4 + 4 = 5
12 ÷ 4 + 4 = 5
3 + 4 = 5
7 = 5 (hmmm. Nope.)
Try putting parenthesis around different numbers until you find the right answer.
Best of luck! :)
