point (-2, -4) as (x,y) to solve for b..  Or you can

use the point slope form:

Given point (-2, -4) as (x₁,y₁) and slope m=4 the formula is

y-y₁ = m(x-x₁)

 

y-(-4) = 4(x-(-2))

y+4 = 4(x+2)

y+4 = 4x+8

y = 4x + 4

Either way is correct and should obtain the same answer.

b is the y-intercept

 

Since the slope is given as 4 our equation would start as:

 

y = 4x + b

 

Now, to solve for b, we can plug the x and y value in from the ordered pair (-2,-4) into our current equation:

 

x = -2  and y = -4

 

-4 = 4(-2) + b
