y = x + 2 (2 consecutive even integers)

y = 2x + 20 (y is 20 more than twice x)

 

2x + 20 = x + 2

-18 = x

 

y = -18 + 2 = -16

 

Plug these back in to check your answers.

 

-16 = 2(-18) + 20

-16 = -16
