a group of campers and one group leader left a campsite in a canoe. they traveled at an average rate of 10 km/h. two hours later, the other group left the campsite in a motorboat. they averaged 25 km/h. how long did it take for the motorboat to catch up to the canoe?

Let x be the hours travelled by the fir group

 

The first travelled distance =10x

 

The second group travelled distance=25(x-2)

 

Equating the distances

 

10x=25(x-2)

 

15x=50

 

x=10/3 hours 

 

The time taken by the second group =x-2=10/3-2=4/3 hours 

 

you can verify the  answer by

 

10*10/3=25*4/3=100/3 miles
