A cell phone company charges a monthly fee of $50 for a phone plus a monthly service charge of $30. Write an algebraic rule to represent the phone company's total charges per month (use the variables x for independent concept and y for dependent concept).

If there is a monthly fee of $50 for the phone and $30 for the service, there is no variable to contend with. There is simply  a total charge of $80 per month.
