If f(x) is a linear function and f(2)=1 and f(4)=-2, then what is f(x)=?

This would be worked the same as

finding the equation of a line as you 

are talking about a linear function:

 

 f(x) = mx + b

 

     1 = 2m + b

 

    -2 = 4m + b

 

subtract the first equation from the second

 

     -3 = 2m

 

  -3/2 = m

 

      4 = b

 

f(x) = (-3/2) x + 4
