       r^2 - 7r + 12   divided    r^2 - 7r + 12

               r + 4                      r^2 + 6r + 8

 

 = (r -3)(r -4)    divided          (r -4)(r -3)

        r + 4                             (r +2)(r+ 4)

 

  =    r  +  4        multiply       (r - 4) (r -3)

   (r - 3)( r -4)                        (r + 2)(r + 4)

 

=      1___

      r + 2

If I understand your question correctly and the complete fraction has the left as the numerator and the right as the denominator, the first two steps are correct. 

 

my understanding is that you have an equation in the form of 

 a

 b 

 c 

 d

 

this then becomes 

 

a  multiply d

b                c

 

you flipped the numerator instead of the denominator.

 

To show it in a different way

 

the top equation is equal to

 

a  multiply   1 

b                  c

                    d

 

and 

 

 1     equals  d

 c                  c

 d
