2/3 - (x + 2)/6 = (5x - 2)/2 Multiply by 6 to clear the denominators.
4 - (x + 2) = 3(5x - 2) Use distribution property to remove parentheses
4 - x - 2 = 15x - 6 Combine like terms on left
2 - x = 15 x - 6 Add x to both sides
2 = 16x - 6 Add 6 to both sides
8 = 16x Divide both sides by 16
8/16 = x Reduce fraction
1/2 = x
2/3 - (1/2 + 2)/6 = (5*1/2 - 2)/2
2/3 - (5/2)/6 = (5/2 - 2)/2
2/3 - (5/2)/6 = (1/2)2
2/3 - 5/12 = 1/4
8/12 - 5/12 = 3/12
3/12 = 3/12 Check
In these types of problems, always multiply by common denominator to clear fractions first and us common denominator to check.
